Bottle Bill

Most bottles and cans with the 5-cent deposit, such as soda and beer containers, get recycled. Unfortunately, most bottles and cans without the 5-cent deposit, such as water bottles or juice cans, are trashed or end up as litter on our roadways - even though they are recyclable. A report by the Container Recycling Institute revealed that nationwide each day, nearly 30 million water bottles are trashed and not recycled.

For more than four years, OCRRA’s Board of Directors has been urging the New York State Legislature to update the original bottle bill. This law, passed in 1982, did not include sport drinks or water bottles, which are so popular today. The bill focused on carbonated beverages. Studies following enactment of the original bottle bill demonstrated that close to 70% of these containers are returned for recycling. An expanded bottle bill will increase recycling and reduce roadside litter.

The expanded bottle bill has generated extensive support in the State Assembly. It has yet to reach that level of support in the New York State Senate, so please help support the expansion of the bottle bill.

OCRRA invites you to show your support by completing an online petition.

Please also contact your state senator and assemblyperson about this important environmental issue. Let your state representatives know that you support recycling and a cleaner community.
